Child Pain Management Treatment
Our children are everything to us. They mean the world and when something causes them pain, it’s almost unbearable for us. We don’t know how to make them feel better and all we can do is stand by and quietly offer support. Most of the time, that wouldn’t mean much as support in itself can’t take away the pain.
Pain doesn’t target only children in certain stages of their lives. Children of all ages can experience acute and chronic pain. Sometimes, there are clear cut remedies and solutions to manage the pain but in most cases, the solution is not easy.
So what can be done?
While some cases can be treated using pain medication and other chemicals, there are some exceptions. More and more parents are seeking more natural alternatives to pumping their kids with medications. One of these alternatives are massage and physical therapy.
How many of us have secretly craved a massage after a long day of grueling work? Massage gives us a chance to unwind and rest our muscles. The same thing applies in the case of pain management. Children who experience pain have been known to react positively to massage therapy. The massage therapy helps manage pain by improving blood circulation in muscles. It also eliminates waste products found in the body as well as increase nutrient flow. Massage therapy for pain management typically involves parasympathetic activity in a relaxed and calm physiological state.
Massage therapy reduces cortisol levels and pain in children. It also improves a child’s mood and sleep patterns. It’s usually difficult to fall asleep when you’re in a considerable amount of pain. Same goes with keeping a good mood. Massage helps them to have a more restful sleep and calmer moods. Children suffering from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and cancer, are known to have experienced lesser pain levels after their first massage session.
Research on pain management and massage
The research on this subject also points to children experiencing lesser pain once they undergo massage therapy. The increased muscle tone and reduced joint pain and anxiety that can be obtained through massage therapy benefits the overall health of a child. Massage therapy has been proven to be an effective mode of treatment for children going through burn treatments. Burn treatments can be excruciating. Children should never have to go through something like that in the first place. But if it so happens that a child has to be in the burn unit, massage therapy is proven to manage the pain.
Massage can help with many things. Make sure that when you seek help for your child, it is from a licensed massage therapist. There may be a lot of amateur therapists offering treatment for a lesser price but quality is important for both the safety of your child and the effectiveness of the treatment.
