What is a Swedish Massage?
With the variety of massages available today, it can throw you off balance as to which one suits you and which one may not suit you. The technique of each massage is adapted to suit different requirements. Some concentrate on basic relaxation techniques whilst other techniques work on healing and injuries.
Swedish massage therapy originated from Sweden. It is considered a modern concept that aids in healing the body and the mind. Specific strokes like tapotement (tapping) and effleurage are used to help reduce joint pain, muscle stiffness, flexibility, improve blood circulation, osteoarthritis, and other conditions. There are five basic techniques to a Swedish massage and they are:
Friction
Through this method, the patient experience a certain amount of heat whereby the muscles are relaxed. Heat is a conductor of muscular energy. The licensed massage therapist uses the palms of the hand on the skin of the patient by moving vigorously. This ensures is heat production through friction. This method warms up the body, improves blood circulation, and involves deeper massage.
Effleurage
Soft strokes glide the body with a sweeping touch that alternates between light and firm pressure in strategic points of the body. Knots and tension muscles are alleviated with the use of the palms of the hand and fingertips.
Vibration
The technique helps loosen sluggish muscles with a vigorous but not heavy force. Muscles are shaken out of their reverie as the movement of the fingertips and the heel of the hand explores areas that need to be awakened.
Tapping
The hands of the therapist are in a cupped position and tap the body in a rhythmic manner. This manipulates the muscles and sluggish parts of the body to be energized. Sides of the palm are used to rev the engine of the body through the cupping and manipulated tapping methodology.
Petrissage
When you think of kneading the dough, this is pretty much the technique used! Kneading the muscles for deeper penetration is the role that this form of Swedish massage plays. The thumbs and knuckles are used so that certain points in the body are awakened from their slumber.
