Post-Surgical Lymphatic Drainage Massage Massage Clinic

What is Post-Surgical Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Also called lymphatic massage or lymph massage, lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle form of body work designed to reestablish and encourage the proper functioning of the lymphatic system.   The lymphatic system is one way in which your body rids itself of toxins and supports the body’s natural immune system. The lymph system is composed of complex and interconnected vessels and nodes found throughout the entire body. If the lymphatic system becomes overwhelmed due to illness or infection, the natural flow of lymphatic fluids can become blocked, leading to swelling, numbness, bruising, and discomfort.  Many surgical procedures also result in disruptions to the lymphatic system, one reason why swelling, or edema, is so often an immediate side effect of surgery. When performed as part of a post-surgical recovery, lymphatic drainage massage can significantly reduce inflammation and swelling. It can also help relieve post-surgical pain, speed healing times, and even improve the aesthetic outcomes of some cosmetic surgical procedures.

Is Lymphatic Drainage Right For Me?

Lymphatic drainage massage may be appropriate for patients undergoing certain types of necessary as well as cosmetic surgeries. In some cases, lymphatic drainage massage may be required because the surgical procedure removes lymph nodes or otherwise disrupts the functioning of the lymphatic system.   Post-surgical lymphatic massage can reduce inflammation and swelling near or at the site of surgery, which can both increase healing times and, in the case of cosmetic procedures, help the body heal into the desired shape.   Thus, lymphatic drainage massage may be recommended as an important part of your healing process. In particular, it is usually appropriate for patients who have undergone:

  • Mastectomydue to the removal of lymph nodes located under the arms and near the breast tissue

  • Cosmetic procedures around the abdomen, including tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) procedures, liposuction and smart-lipodue to the extreme swelling that can be the result of the disruption to the lymphatic system in that area
  • Facial procedures such as facelift and blepharoplasty due to the delicate nature of the skin around the face and especially the eyes

  • Rhinoplasty (a “nose job”) due to the prolonged nature of post-surgical swelling, which can last for as long as one year for some patients

As with any surgical procedure, it is important to follow the directives and recommendations of your surgeon and primary care physician. In many cases, you may find that your surgeon has recommended lymphatic massage as part of your recovery; however, it is important to consult with your surgeon about all aspects of your post-surgical recovery, including whether lymphatic drainage is appropriate for you.

5 Star Review✰✰✰✰✰

I was so thankful for Jacqueline’s lymphatic massages after my surgery. Not only is she really good at lymphatic massages she is also very knowledgeable with recovery and health and wellness. I couldn’t have asked for a better massage therapist. If you need a lymphatic massage she is your girl! I would give 10 stars if I could! – Coleen Duckworth
