Cupping Therapy
One of the most ancient forms of alternative medicine can be found in cupping therapy. Cupping therapy is a method for releasing toxins from the organs and tissues of your body, which can be a great addition to massage therapy. It is also known as horn treatment, hijama cupping or vacuum cupping. In cupping therapy, special cups are placed on the skin by an experienced professional to create a suction. The skin tissue is drawn into the cup by this suction force, which causes an increase in the blood flow to that particular area. This helps to detoxify the body as the enhanced blood flow draws the toxins and impurities away from the organs and nearby tissue. They are then eliminated towards the surface.

There are many different cupping techniques available these days. Some of them are-

Dry vs. Wet Cupping
Although cupping has become quite trendy now, it finds its origins in the ancient Chinese, Egyptian and Middle Eastern cultures. It has been found that the Egyptians used cupping therapy way back in 1550 B.C.
Cupping therapy can be classified into two broad categories-
- Dry Cupping
- Wet Cupping
In dry cupping, a vacuum is created in the cup by setting a flammable substance like paper, herb or alcohol on fire, which is then placed inside the cup. When the hot air inside the cup cools after placing it on the skin, a vacuum is created. This causes the blood vessels to expand and the skin to redden and rise. The cup is then left on that area for close to 3 minutes, after which it is removed. Some modern versions of this cupping technique replace the fire with rubber pumps for creating suction. Sometimes, silicone cups are also used to create the effect of massage therapy when moved from place to place on the body.
Wet cupping involves medicinal bleeding along with suction. In this method, a suction cup is placed on the skin area for around 3 minutes. After the cup is removed, small and light cuts are made on the skin, from where the blood is drawn out by placing the suction cups again on that area. This session is finished with an antibiotic treatment along with a bandage to prevent infection. The skin also goes back to looking normal in around ten days.
