How Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage Helps to Regenerate Skin Tissue to Heal After Surgery?

MLD Helps Regenerate Skin to Heal After Surgery | Reduce Scarring

Manual Lymphatic Drainage massage is a gentle massage technique which helps to reduce edema.  Edema can happen for many reasons, including surgery. The lymphatic system works closely with the circulatory system and plays an important role in flushing out toxins from the body. Signs of poor lymphatic drainage are swelling in the arms and legs.  Other lymphatic problems are a swollen lymph node under the jaw, armpit or the groin. If you experience discomfort due to swollen nodes or edema after surgery, you can work with a licensed massage therapist.  A therapist can help alleviate symptoms and accelerate the tissue regeneration process.

How does manual lymphatic massage work?

The role of the lymphatic system is to collect and filter toxins in the body. It is key to good immunity. If you have had surgery, your immune system is in overdrive and trying to keep infection at bay. You could experience water retention and discomfort for a few days. Manual lymphatic massage is done using 4 types of strokes – circles, pump, rotary, and scoop techniques. The technique to be used will be decided by the therapist based on a patient’s needs.

When you go in for an MLD massage, the therapist will have you lie down on a massage table. The therapist first starts working on the unaffected areas to stimulate fluid movement. Slow, rhythmic strokes and gentle skin stretching is done with a flat hand. The front and the back of the body are massaged, so that fluid accumulation is directed away from the affected areas.

Therapists start from the top and gradually progress downwards. They start with the area at the front, sides and back of the neck. Once that is done, the chest, sides and the underarm are massaged with long, gentle strokes. The groin area and the legs get massaged as well. Therapists work along the length of the body’s lymphatic system to ensure proper drainage. If the extremities are also swollen, they are massaged gently, so the patient does not experience pain.

Therapists work very gently around the incision and ensure its integrity—deep breathing before and after the therapy help with relaxation and boosting oxygen levels in the blood stream. Therapists also recommended drinking more water after the massage session to flush out toxins faster. A licensed therapist determines the number of sessions required based on a patient’s condition. Reasonable levels of physical activity will help accelerate the recovery process.

How Lymphatic Massage is effective in regenerating tissue after surgery?

MLD massage is highly effective as a post-surgery treatment method. Any surgery is invasive and traumatic for the body. Manual lymphatic drainage reduces swelling and relieves pain. Since toxins are flushed out from the body by massaging, the immune system gets a boost and can manufacture white cells faster. Lymphatic massage plays a key role in the recovery process and wellbeing. If you want to know more about how the process works, you can schedule an appointment with a licensed massage therapist at the Lymphatic Drainage Massage Clinic.  Our clinic is open to Orlando residents as well.
