Chronic Pain Treatment for Children Using Massage

Pediatric Massage for Chronic Pain Treatment

Living with pain is never easy for adults and kids alike.  The fact is that any child who has undergone trauma or suffered an injury which has led to pain and discomfort can get a massage to help alleviate the symptoms. Kids don’t take well to discomfort and are likely to get cranky and difficult to handle. In this situation, it would be difficult for their parents, and even the medical staff attending them, to comprehend their needs and provide the right solution.

Pediatric Chronic Pain

Chronic pain (defined as persistent and recurrent pain) is a significant problem in the pediatric population, conservatively estimated to affect 20% to 35% of children and adolescents around the world (King et al., 2011; Stanford, Chambers, Biesanz, & Chen, 2008). The most common chronic pain conditions are musculoskeletal pain, headaches, and abdominal pain.

Children with chronic conditions and complex medical needs often develop fear and anxiety surrounding their medical care—and they must cope with a variety of stressors, symptoms and side effects related to their illness and treatment. Facilitating healthy touch experiences within the medical system can help restore trust and teach children how to effectively express their needs, while improving the quality of life of the child.

Massage Treatments

There are massage treatments available today that help children relieve the pain. A licensed massage therapist can help to figure out where the problem lies and begin to alleviate muscle tension. Sometimes the primary cause can be quite deep-rooted resulting in another problem taking over.  A child who is inhibited from a normal life needs is faced with challenges to help them cope. A pediatric massage therapist can help the child reassess the problem with a workable solution through the right pressure and techniques.
