Why You Need LDM Therapy After Cosmetic Procedures
Waiting to see the results you have been hoping for after a cosmetic procedure can be pretty exciting. And it can be hard to be patient, especially if you have undergone a minimally invasive procedure such as Smart Lipo or Cool Sculpting. In fact, because so many of today’s cosmetic procedures are minimally invasive, it’s easy to forget that your body may need help healing and recovering.
One of the best ways to promote healing and decrease recovery time after a cosmetic procedure such as liposuction is manual lymphatic drainage (MLD). MLD is a specialized form of massage therapy specifically designed to help the body heal after surgery. MLD is especially recommended for cosmetic procedures such as liposuction, Tummy Tuck, and breast augmentation, which can disrupt the proper function of lymph nodes in the abdomen and armpits.
Here are five important reasons why you should consider making MLD part of your post-cosmetic surgery recovery plan:
Reduces post-surgical swelling and bruising
Lymphatic drainage therapy reduces swelling and bruising after surgery by promoting the proper flow of lymph around the body, but especially near the surgical site. Lymph is part of the body’s natural healing process: it brings antibodies and nutrients to areas of injury and helps damaged cells flush out toxins. However, during surgery, the free flow of lymph can be disrupted, causing excessive swelling which is ultimately counterproductive to the healing process. By promoting the proper, helpful flow of lymph, MLD reduces harmful swelling and painful bruising at and near the site of the surgical procedure.
Minimizes the potential for negative side effects
If left untreated after a cosmetic procedure, the swelling caused by the accumulation of lymph can turn into a problematic side effect. This is especially true for surgical procedures, such as liposuction, that occur in the abdominal area. Pockets of lymph can build up in the spaces left behind by the cannula, the tube that is used to suction out the unwanted fatty tissue during a liposuction procedure. If left untreated, this stationary lymph can eventually become a hard lump called a fibrosis or a pocket of serum called a seroma. MLD helps to minimize the risk of these unpleasant side effects by draining these pockets of lymph.
Aids pain reduction and enhances relaxation
MLD is an extremely gentle form of massage. Unlike other types of massage, it does not involve deep pressure or heat, both of which can be counter-productive in a post-surgical setting. Yet despite the fact that it is extremely gentle, it is also extremely effective in helping ease the discomfort that can be a natural part of any cosmetic surgery procedure. In past, this pain relief comes with a reduction in uncomfortable post-operative swelling. At the same time, MLD is highly relaxing and helps reduce post-surgical stress and anxiety.
Improves long-term results
You chose a cosmetic procedure such as liposuction to improve the shape of your body. Unfortunately, if the proper steps aren’t taken during recovery, your body may naturally heal in ways that might undermine the results of the surgery. For instance, swelling that turns into a fibrosis can leave an unsightly lump just where you were hoping to be slim and smooth. One way to help your body heal into the proper shape is by wearing specially-designed compression garments throughout the healing process. MLD can also help ensure you get the long-term results you need by minimizing swelling and speeding up your body’s natural ability to heal.
Your doctor recommended it
The most important thing you can do after a cosmetic procedure is follow your surgeon’s recovery instructions to the letter. This includes giving your body time to rest and heal, wearing any compression garments for the duration called for by your surgeon, and getting the right type of healing massage. It’s quite likely that your surgeon included MLD massage therapy as part of your recovery instructions.
If you do not see MLD included in those recovery instructions, be sure to ask your surgeon if MLD could help your recovery from cosmetic surgery.
